A brave group of grade 6 students at Northwood Public School have been involved in an extra curricular inquiry club to celebrate International Day of the Girl. The students, both boys and girls, have been spending their nutrition breaks researching about the importance of universal education and gender equality.
On Friday, October 10th, to celebrate the Day of the Girl (October 11th), the club presented lessons designed to raise awareness about real-world issues surrounding universal education in classrooms from grades 1 through 8. They tackled important questions like “Why do we go to school?” and “Why might somebody not be allowed to get an education?”
“What we accomplished today felt really, really good because I know that we made a difference. Everyone should have a right to education. It’s like Malala said: ‘We can’t all move forward if half of us are held back.’” – Omar
“We need gender equality. That’s why I am in the club.” – Chris
“We missed a lot of recesses and nutrition breaks, but I feel really good about this club. It felt like being a social studies teacher. Social studies used to be my least favorite subject but now I think it’s my favorite because we get to learn about how it is to live other places in the world.” – Reem
“I feel so different! I feel proud to have been a part of spreading the message and so lucky to have access to education.” – Alasaca
